The state of Israel is engaged in a war of extermination against the Palestinians. The pace and tactics of this war may vary—from slow humiliation, apartheid, to sudden mass-murder—but not its intent, which has been evident for decades. Faced with Israel’s genocidal intent, armed resistance is the Palestinians’ only recourse. Political negotiation has been systematically rebuffed; unarmed protestors have been shot in their hundreds; calls for BDS have been rejected as ‘antisemitic’. Anyone condemning the Palestinians’ armed resistance—which is not only Hamas’ but that of the entire Palestinian people—is effectively siding with Israel. Now, as the Israelis deliberately target 2 million defenseless Gazans, denunciations of Palestinian violence by those who have not had to endure seven decades of dispossession, humiliation, and mass murder, are not just expressions of complicity with the oppressors; they are alibis for genocide. You do not tell a people being murdered to refrain from striking their murderer. When these denunciations come from America or Europe—the countries actively sponsoring Israel’s genocidal policies—their hypocrisy redoubles the obscenity. The current massacre of 2 million defenceless Palestinians in Gaza is the demonstration of Israel’s genocidal intent. This is a moment of clarity. On one side we have a settler-colonial state equipped with one of the most powerful military forces on earth actively engaged in exterminating an indigenous population. On the other side, a people without a state, without an army, utterly isolated, vilified as ‘animals’ as they try desperately to stave off their own annihilation. Calls for peace, negotiation and an end to the occupation fail to see that Israel is the occupation: its continuing existence is predicated upon the systematic dispossession of Palestinian territory together with the imprisonment, torture, and murder of Palestinians who resist this dispossession. The choice is clear: either Zionist Israel or Palestine, but not both. There can be no freedom for Palestine unless Israel ceases to be a Zionist state.    

There is no neutral ground in this conflict: not to side with the oppressed is to side with their oppressors. This much should be clear by now to Critical Theorists and psychoanalysts. The time is long past for pontificating about the importance of pacifism and non-violent struggle. Those who denounce the Palestinian struggle as unworthy because it is currently led by Islamic militants who lack a properly developed critique of capitalism are buffoons. Capitalism is religion and the triumph of religion is the triumph of capitalism. In this struggle, militants inspired by ideological fantasies are not the enemies of liberation. Such criticisms ignore the long history of anti-capitalist struggle in the Arab world, for which the liberation of Palestine has always stood as a signifier for proletarian liberation. Instead of wasting tears on melancholic remembrances of their past failures, Marxists should be able to identify the actuality of the struggle in the present. Israel is a settler-colonial state that exacerbates the conditions of regression and underdevelopment in the Arab world. As a racist colonial state, Israel forecloses the possibility of demands for freedom in this region and beyond. Israel is in fact the bulwark of neo-liberal capitalist expansion in the Middle East. In its cyclical repetition of primitive accumulation from the incarceration of Palestinians, Israel and its allies represent the Real of the drive, of the drive for valorization and surplus-value extraction from both the living and the dead. There is no anti-capitalist struggle without an anti-colonial struggle, and vice versa. In this moment, the deafening silence of decolonization theorists in the university is repugnant and will be recorded in history. Equally repellent is the statement in support of Israel issued by the World Association of Psychoanalysis on October 8, 2023. Such statements require a call for working through the Zionist prejudices of the European psychoanalytic field whose blindness to history and context causes it to mistake a real analytic act—one that is unprecedented and transformative—for a hysterical acting-out. 

We reject the insistence that an occupied people should remain silent and ‘civilised’ while fighting the roots of its oppression. Those who think atrocities and massacres call for cheap gestures of virtue signalling effectively defend the roots which breed this violence. In the history of anti-colonial struggles, the perpetrators and beneficiaries of colonialism always feared the rage and revenge of their victims. There is no ‘permanent security’ for a colonial state.

We stand with Palestine as a universal signifier of liberation from oppression; we stand with Palestine as a central site of struggle against the barbarism of capitalist domination and exploitation.

تخوض دولة إسرائيل حرب إبادة ضد الفلسطينيين. قد تختلف وتيرة هذه الحرب وتكتيكاتها – من الإذلال البطيء، والفصل العنصري، إلى القتل الجماعي المفاجئ – ولكنها لا تتغاير بهدفها، الذي كان واضحا لعقود من الزمن. فبوجه نوايا إسرائيل للإبادة الجماعية، تبقى المقاومة المسلحة هي الخيار الوحيد للفلسطينيين. قد تم رفض المفاوضات السياسية بشكل منهجي؛ وتم إطلاق النار على مئات المتظاهرين العزل؛ وقد تم رفض الدعوات المطالبة بمقاطعة إسرائيل باعتبارها دعوات “معادية للسامية”. إن كل من يدين المقاومة المسلحة الفلسطينية ـ والتي لا تقتصر على حماس فحسب، بل إنها مقاومة الشعب الفلسطيني برمته ـ فهو يقف فعلياً إلى جانب إسرائيل. والآن، بينما يستهدف الإسرائيليون عمداً سكان غزة العزل، فإن إدانات العنف الفلسطيني من قِبَل أولئك الذين لم يضطروا إلى تحمل سبعة عقود من السلب والإهانة والقتل الجماعي، ليست مجرد تعبيرات عن التواطؤ مع المُضطَهِد؛ هي أعذار لتبرير الإبادة الجماعية. لا يُقال لشعب يُقتل أن عليه الامتناع عن ضرب قاتله. عندما تأتي هذه الإدانات من أمريكا أو أوروبا ــ الدول التي ترعى سياسات الإبادة الجماعية الإسرائيلية ــ فإن نفاقها يضاعف من فحشها. إن المذبحة الحالية التي يتعرض لها مليوني فلسطيني أعزل في غزة هي دليل على نية إسرائيل للإبادة الجماعية. هذه لحظة وضوح. فمن ناحية، لدينا دولة استعمارية استيطانية مجهزة بواحدة من أقوى القوات العسكرية على وجه الأرض والتي تقوم بإبادة السكان الأصليين. وعلى الجانب الآخر، هناك شعب بلا دولة، بلا جيش، معزول تمامًا، يُطلق عليه عبارات مثل “حيوانات” للانتقاص من انسانيته، بينما يحاول تجنب إبادته. إن الدعوات للسلام والتفاوض وإنهاء الاحتلال لا ترى أن إسرائيل هي الاحتلال: فإن استمرار وجودها يعتمد على السلب المنهجي للأراضي الفلسطينية إلى جانب سجن وتعذيب وقتل الفلسطينيين الذين يقاومون هذا البؤس. والخيار واضح: إما إسرائيل الصهيونية أو فلسطين، وليس كليهما معًا. لن تكون حرية لفلسطين إلا إذا توقفت إسرائيل عن كونها دولة صهيونية

ليس هناك أرض محايدة في هذا الصراع: عدم الوقوف إلى جانب المظلومين يعني الوقوف إلى جانب مضطهديهم. يجب أن يكون هذا واضحًا الآن للمنظرين النقديين والمحللين النفسيين. لقد انتهى زمن الحديث عن أهمية السلمية والنضال اللاعنفي. إن أولئك الذين يدينون النضال الفلسطيني باعتباره غير مُحق بسبب أن قيادته الحالية إسلامية والتي تفتقر النقد الملائم للرأسمالية، هؤلاء هم مجرد مهرجين. الرأسمالية هي دِين، وانتصار الدين هو انتصار الرأسمالية. ففي هذا الصراع، إن المناضلين الذين تستلهمهم الأوهام الأيديولوجية ليسوا أعداء التحرير. تتجاهل مثل هذه الانتقادات التاريخ الطويل للنضال ضد الرأسمالية في العالم العربي، والذي كان تحرير فلسطين فيه دائمًا بمثابة دلالة على تحرر البروليتاريا. وبدلاً من إهدار الدموع على الذكريات الحزينة لإخفاقاتهم الماضية، يجب على الماركسيين أن يكونوا قادرين على التعرف على واقع النضال في الوقت الحاضر. إسرائيل دولة استعمارية استيطانية تؤدي إلى تفاقم ظروف التأخر والتخلف في العالم العربي. بما هي دولة استعمارية عنصرية، تلغي إسرائيل إمكانية المطالبة بالحرية في هذه المنطقة وخارجها. إن إسرائيل هي في الواقع مَعقِل التوسع الرأسمالي النيوليبرالي في الشرق الأوسط. في تكرارها الدوري للتراكم البدائي الناتج عن سجن الفلسطينيين، تمثل إسرائيل وحلفاؤها واقع الدافع، الدافع إلى التثمين واستخراج فائض القيمة من الأحياء والأموات. لا يوجد نضال ضد الرأسمالية دون نضال ضد الاستعمار، والعكس صحيح. ففي هذه اللحظة، إن الصمت المطبق لمنظري تصفية الاستعمار في الجامعات هو أمر بغيض وسيسجله التاريخ. ومما يثير نفس القدر من الاشمئزاز هو البيان المؤيد لإسرائيل الصادر عن الجمعية العالمية للتحليل النفسي في 8 أكتوبر 2023. وتشير مثل هذه التصريحات إلى ضرورة كشف التحيزات الصهيونية في مجال التحليل النفسي الأوروبي، والذي يؤدي عميه عن التاريخ والسياق إلى انعدام قدرته على التمييز بين فعل تحليلي – غير مسبوق ومحوّل – وبين تمثيل هستيري

نحن نرفض الإصرار على أن الشعب المحتل يجب أن يظل صامتًا و”متحضرًا” بينما يحارب جذور اضطهاده. أولئك الذين يعتقدون أن الفظائع والمجازر تتطلب إشارات رخيصة للفضيلة، هم في الواقع يدافعون عن الجذور التي تولّد هذا العنف. في تاريخ النضال ضد الاستعمار، كان المستعمرون والمستفيدون منه يخشون دائمًا غضب ضحاياهم وثأرهم. لا يوجد “أمن دائم” لدولة استعمارية

إننا نقف مع فلسطين بما هي دال عالمي على التحرر من الاضطهاد؛ إننا نقف مع فلسطين كموقع مركزي للنضال ضد بربرية الهيمنة الرأسمالية والاستغلال
